![]() ![]() As silly as it might sound, at times it impacted my self confidence, making me feel like I was falling behind my peers and still a child.ġ8, just before my A levels. It wasn't only a little embarrassing but it held me back in terms of job opportunities, volunteering, taking care of myself (meaning I had to ask my mum to help with things I was capable of doing myself - annoying for her and me), and some social activities were out of the question for me, I felt like I missed out on a lot. The biggest thing for me was the lack of independence I had in comparison to my friends, I don't want my children to experience that too. Yes, I'd cover provisional, lessons, tests and first car - though I'd want them to get a job to pay for their insurance and petrol, that would probably mean that they'd be a lot happier with a cheap to insure run-around until they can afford something nicer for themselves (teaches responsibility etc.). If he wanted any money for any luxuries such as food or rent, he had to go to the pub and ask for some back.Ībsolutely! This was a fully functional man operating dangerous equipment down a mine. I usually have 8 at lunch and then maybe 10 at the club on the way home”. This was also when health and safety became a thing and employee welfare at least began to be considered.Īnyway, when he was less senior and had just progressed into being a trainee engineer (basically the first job that got you off the shovels), at one pit they decided to start doing medicals and health screening. This was as recently as 20-30 years ago when they were still closing down so they basically moved him around as one pit closed he would move on to the next. My grandad used to be head/deputy engineer at several mines. ![]()
